Background of the Study
Traditional architecture in Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State, is a testament to indigenous building techniques and cultural aesthetics developed over centuries. Archaeological remains such as building foundations, decorative motifs, and construction materials offer a window into past architectural practices and community lifestyles (Adekunle, 2023). These remnants reveal the ingenuity and resourcefulness of ancestral builders, reflecting social hierarchies, spiritual beliefs, and environmental adaptations (Olatunde, 2024). Despite modern urban development, many traditional structures have either survived or left traces that contribute to our understanding of regional heritage. The study investigates how these archaeological remains inform the evolution of local architecture and cultural identity. It examines the transition from traditional to contemporary building practices and evaluates the preservation challenges posed by urban encroachment. By integrating archaeological data with historical records and local narratives, this research seeks to highlight the significance of traditional architecture as both cultural heritage and a source of sustainable design inspiration (Babatunde, 2023). The study also emphasizes the need for conservation policies that protect these relics while promoting community pride and historical awareness (Folake, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
In Ilesa East, the archaeological remains of traditional architecture are increasingly threatened by modern construction and neglect. Many historical structures are deteriorating due to insufficient preservation efforts, resulting in the loss of valuable cultural and historical information (Segun, 2023). The gap between rapid urbanization and heritage conservation has led to a diminished understanding of indigenous architectural practices and their cultural significance. This study addresses the urgent need for systematic documentation and protection of traditional architectural remains, ensuring that the historical narrative of the region is not irreversibly lost (Tola, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To document archaeological remains of traditional architecture in Ilesa East.
To analyze the cultural significance of indigenous building practices.
To recommend conservation measures for traditional architectural relics.
Research Questions:
What are the primary archaeological indicators of traditional architecture in Ilesa East?
How do these remains reflect the cultural and social values of past communities?
Which conservation strategies can effectively preserve traditional architectural heritage?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Archaeological remains provide critical insights into traditional architectural practices.
H2: Traditional architecture significantly reflects the cultural identity of local communities.
H3: Effective conservation measures can ensure the longevity of historical architectural remains.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant for architects, historians, and cultural preservationists by shedding light on traditional architectural practices. The findings will contribute to improved conservation strategies and inspire contemporary sustainable design that respects cultural heritage. By integrating archaeological evidence with historical narratives, the research enriches our understanding of indigenous building techniques and their role in shaping cultural identity (Ireti, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining archaeological remains of traditional architecture in Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State, focusing exclusively on historical structures and indigenous construction methods without addressing modern architectural trends.
Definitions of Terms:
Traditional Architecture: Indigenous building practices and designs passed down through generations.
Archaeological Remains: Physical remnants of past human activity used to interpret historical lifestyles.
Conservation: The process of preserving cultural and historical artifacts for future generations.
